Tristar worker sacked after speaking out

A Sydney worker who has spoken out about a redundancy row at a Sydney factory has been sacked by his employer, the Australian Workers Union (AWU) says. Marty Peek has claimed in the media that his employer, Tristar Steering and Suspension, is paying workers to turn up to work and do nothing until the expiry of a redundancy agreement which promises them four weeks' pay for each year of service. Mr Peek, the union shop steward, was on Friday sacked after 35 years of service, with Tristar claiming he had brought the company into disrepute. Advertisement: Story continues below The company said the decision to end Mr Peek's employment related to comments he had made dating back as far as 2001. His termination letter said Tristar was also concerned about two TV interviews he had last month, as well as comments Mr Peek made to Labor's industrial relations spokeswoman Julia Gillard when she visited the factory in February. The letter said Tristar found allegations made by Mr Peek were false and misleading as well as defamatory. The AWU said Tristar was simply trying to silence its workers. "It's a deliberate attempt to quieten the rest of the Rosetta Stone Chinese workforce and dampen down the prospect of any other workers going to the media," said AWU spokesman Vern Falconer. "It's a summary dismissal, they've terminated him without notice and they've denied him his long service leave and other entitlements. "He's distraught." Mr Falconer said Mr Peek had been an advocate for the union, and had become a spokesman because many of his colleagues had English as a second language. He said he feared for the future of other workers at the plant. "The way this company behaves and has behaved, is just extraordinary. I wouldn't put anything past this company to do anything, to systematically dismiss other employees, it wouldn't surprise me," Mr Falconer said. The AWU would now take the matter to the Federal Court on Monday afternoon to try to reinstate Mr Peek. A spokeswoman for Tristar said it was inappropriate for the company to discuss internal disciplinary proceedings at this time. Speaking before the dismissal, Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd said he was deeply concerned for the workers at Tristar. "This has been a despicable scandal which has gone on for far too long," Mr Rudd told reporters. "We need to resolve this matter in the interest of all the workers concerned." The Office of Workplace Services, which has begun action against Tristar, said it would closely monitor the current situation and make contact with the employer and employee.

That was originally my plan

The young man stood before the judge, his usually neatly trimmed hair now long enough to brush the collar of his prison jumpsuit. Glenn Duffie Shriver had confessed his transgressions and was here, in a federal courtroom with his mother watching, to receive his sentence and to try, somehow, to explain it all. When the time came for him to address the court, he spoke of the many dreams he'd had to work on behalf of his country. "Mine was to be a life of service," he said. "I could have been very valuable. That was originally my plan." Advertisement: Story continues belowEDITOR'S NOTE China, ever more powerful, has become a major instigator of espionage in the United States. First of a two-part series on Beijing's efforts, many successful, to steal American secrets and technology. He had been a seemingly all-American, clean-cut guy: No criminal record. Engaged to be married. A job teaching English overseas. In letters to the judge, loved ones described the 29-year-old Midwesterner as honest and caring a good citizen. His fiancee called him "Mr. Patriot." Such descriptions make the one that culminated in the courtroom all the more baffling: Glenn Shriver was also a spy recruit for China. He took $70,000 from individuals he knew to be Chinese intelligence officers to try to land a job with a U.S. government agency first the State Department and later the CIA. And Shriver is just one of at least 57 defendants in federal prosecutions since 2008 charging espionage conspiracies with China or efforts to pass classified information, sensitive technology or trade secrets to intelligence operatives Rosetta Stone Italian state-sponsored entities, private individuals or businesses in China, according to an Associated Press review of U.S. Justice Department cases. Of those, nine are awaiting trial, and two are considered fugitives. The other defendants have been convicted, though some are yet to be sentenced. Most of these prosecutions have received little public attention especially compared with the headline splash that followed last summer's arrest of 10 Russian "sleeper agents" who'd been living in suburban America for more than a decade but, according to Attorney General Eric Holder, passed no secrets. Contrast that with this snapshot:In Honolulu, a former B-2 bomber engineer and one-time professor at Purdue gets 32 years in prison for working with the Chinese to develop a vital part for a cruise missile in a case that a high-ranking Justice Department official said resulted in the leak of "some of our country's most sensitive weapons-related designs."In Boston, a Harvard-educated businessman is sent to prison, along with his ex-wife, for conspiring for a decade to illegally export parts used in military radar and electronic warfare systems to research institutes that manufacture items for the Chinese military. The Department of Defense concluded the illegal exports "represented a serious threat to U.S. national and regional defense security interests."In Los Angeles, a man goes to jail for selling Raytheon-manufactured thermal imaging cameras to a buyer in Shanghai whose company develops infrared technology. The cameras are supposed to be restricted for export to China because of "their potential use in a wide variety of military and civilian applications," according to court documents. And in Alexandra, Va., there is Shriver, who told the judge quite simply: "Somewhere along the way, I climbed into bed with the wrong people." All five of these defendants were sentenced over just an 11-day span earlier this year. In Shriver's case, when once he asked his Chinese handlers "What, exactly, do you guys want?" the response, as detailed in court documents, was straightforward. "If it's possible," they told him, "we want you to get us some secrets or classified information."

Could you help Max clean up his act?

MOST parrots are colourful birds but cheeky Max even turns the air blue. When RSPCA inspectors rescued him from a Leicester home on Monday, they got an earful of X-rated language. Now living at Woodside Animal Centre, in Braunstone Frith, the abusive avian has settled down as he adapts to his new environment, although care assistants expect him to be cursing again in no time. They hope to find the foulmouthed five-year-old a home where he can learn new vocabulary. Woodside manager Lisa Smith said: "Max is a cheeky chappy and he does talk - although all we've heard at the moment is blasphemy. "But he's only young so there's the potential for him to learn so much more."Whoever takes him has on has to bear in mind he could live for another 70 years. It's a massive responsibility but he will make a great pet for someone who has had experience with parrots. "He needs someone who will be home a lot of the time, otherwise he'll be very bored - he needs a lot of attention. "He'll also need a big cage and the opportunity to get out." If you are interested in giving Max a home, call the centre on 0116 233 6677. MANILA, Philippines - Recognizing the very significant role the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) plays in the overall scheme to improve learning outcomes among school children, the Department of Education (DepEd) will join the world in the Rosetta Stone celebration of International Mother Language Day (IMLD) on Monday, February 21.Through Memorandum No. 19, series 2011, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said that DepEd supports the declaration of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate such to promote linguistic and cultural diversity as universal values that strengthen the unity and cohesion of societies. With theme "Making Every Child a Reader through MTB-MLE," Luistro said that the celebration challenges DepEd to explore more possibilities on how MTB-MLE can help our country achieve the 2015 Education for All (EFA) goals, particularly in making every child a reader. A UNIVERSITY has become the first in the country to train midwives in sign language. Midwifery students at De Montfort University will be taught by Belgrave charity Action Deafness. Deaf mum Jayne Smith, 28, said she would have appreciated a signing midwife during the delivery of her daughters Charlotte, five, and Angela, three. She said: "It would have made me feel more confident when asking questions about my health and my babies' health. "It is a fantastic idea. It would help them understand the emotional issues, difficulties and barriers that exist for deaf people."Bernadette Gregory, senior lecturer in midwifery at De Montfort, said: "We hope to teach the next generation of midwives how to communicate and provide better care to these women. "I believe we are the first university to run this type of training and I that hope by highlighting this issue, midwives and other health care professionals will introduce it into their training." Dr Joanna Downes, from Action Deafness, said the course would "enlighten the student midwives on the psychological, emotional, social and communication issues facing deaf parents and hearing parents of deaf babies".

Egypt Live Report

But one possible minor inconvenience following his departure from office: the Swiss government has just ordered a freeze on any assets belonging to him and his entourage, the Swiss foreign ministry said. Ah well. Advertisement: Story continues below 1750 GMT: In London, David Cameron, prime minister of the former colonial power, Britain, found a new adjective, to say it had been a "remarkable", before urging whatever government is formed to "put in place the building blocks of a truly open, free and democratic society." "As a friend of Egypt and the Egyptian people we stand ready to help in any way that we can," he added. 1745 GMT: Voicing a key concern of western governments, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel urged the new leadership that will emerge to respect the country's 1979 peace treaty with Israel. Saying "I rejoice with the people in Egypt," and urging all to work together in peace, she added: "We also expect the future Egyptian government to continue to keep the peace in the Middle East, in that the agreements made with Israel are respected and Israel's security is guaranteed," she said. 1742 GMT: And the leading opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei has also welcomed the announcement. "We have got our life back," he told Al-Jazeera television in an interview. 1732: In Cairo, Egypt's powerful Islamist opposition group the Muslim Brotherhood hailed the resignation and "thanked the army, which kept its promises." 1729 GMT: In Washington, US Vice Rosetta Stone V3 President Joe Biden has also opted, like German Chancellor Merkel, for the cautiously diplomatic word "historic". Lebanon's Hezbollah also used the word, though adding crucially that it was a "historic victory", as car horns blared and fireworks exploded in Beirut. 1727 GMT: Turkey's foreign minister has congratulated the Egyptian people on toppling Mubarak and said he hoped a new system would emerge in the wake of the veteran president's departure. "Congratulations to the Egyptian people. And we hope that a system meeting the expectations of the Egyptian people will emerge," Ahmet Davutoglu said in a message on his Twitter page. 1720 GMT: Cyberactivist Wael Ghonim has tweeted "congratulations to Egypt, the criminal has left the palace" in Arabic. "Welcome back Egypt," he added in English on his Twitter page, as celebrations continued in cities around Egypt. Ghonim, 30, a Google regional marketing executive, emerged as a spokesman of the uprising after his release on Monday following 12 days in custody. 1714 GMT: In Amman, Jordan's powerful Muslim Brotherhood said Mubarak's decision should be a "lesson" to all Arab regimes. "Arab regimes should learn a lesson from what happened. All Arab peoples suffer from the corruption of their regimes," Jamil Abu Baker, the movement's spokesman, told. 1710 GMT: In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed Mubarak's decision to resign as a "historic change". We can expect a lot of these sorts of rather guarded comments from Mubarak's former western allies. 1707 GMT: "As Mubarak decided to step down, geopolitical concerns eased and (New York) crude oil prices retreated toward $86," said Sucden analyst Myrto Sokou. "The potential shutdown in the operations at the Suez Canal looks very unlikely for the near-term." 1704 GMT: World oil prices slide and European stock markets bounce following news of Mubarak's resignation. Brent North Sea crude for delivery in March sank to $100.43 per barrel, before pulling back to $100.75, down 12 cents from yesterday closing level. 1703 GMT: Iran says Egyptians have achieved a "great victory" with the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak.

I felt that isolation big-time

While death stalks the pages, love underpins the whole story; namely, how a dead mother's love offers protection against the most evil of evils. The ultimate fantasy of maternal love sustains Harry time and again when he is caught in the grip of Lord Voldemort and his ilk, and that love sees him through to the bitter end. Absent or dead parents are a remarkable feature of children's literature. The Famous Five would surely not have had so many adventures if there had been more parental involvement in their lives, other than mad Uncle Quentin and ineffectual Aunt Fanny. Roald Dahl also liked to kill off the parents or make them truly awful, like the Dursleys. For Shelley, Croft and Vanheusden, the books took off for them when they were on the brink of adolescence; at an age when they were starting to form their own opinions and imagining life outside the family. And they felt the pain of Harry's abandonment, even if they weren't orphans. Supermarket worker Christian Peris, 19, was sucked into Potterdom when he was grounded as a teenager. ''The only place I was allowed to go was the library and I started to read it. I was immediately drawn in because Harry was living in a cupboard under the stairs and I was more or less confined to my room. I felt very close to him.'' ''I didn't have the best childhood,'' says Shelley. ''I guess I could identify with Harry wanting to get away to this magical place where anything was possible. My parents divorced at a young age and they always fought, so it could be quite hard at home, especially having to go from one parent to another. I felt that isolation big-time. By the age of 13, I was aware that families didn't come in one set type and they were all pretty much stuffed up in their own ways. I longed for what Harry wanted the perfect family with two parents who loved him.'' McDonald's Rosetta Stone Greekemployee Vanheusden, 20, whose home in Frankston is adorned with posters, went through a similar experience. ''When I was 12, my parents separated and I had two younger sisters. I felt I had to be there for them all the time and not focus on how I was feeling. I had to get away from it all. Reading Harry Potter was about focusing on me for a change and not everybody else. I felt very alone. I couldn't go to anyone. I had to be there for my sisters, but there was no one really there for me, so these books were a form of escape.'' The books also served as a moral compass, informing young readers' choices on how to live. When The Philosopher's Stone first came out, it caused an outcry among some religious members because of its use of magic. But the entire story spun out over seven volumes revealed itself to be an intensely moral fable with the tenets of Christianity at its core; namely, good triumphing over evil, life and love winning out over death, and justice meted out to those who deserve it. Harry triumphs over adversity using old-fashioned courage and integrity, as well as magic. And he's so ordinary! Not blessed with film-star good looks or a particularly high IQ, like swotty Hermione, he's a shining beacon for normality. Every day, his actions are repeated around the world by regular Joe Soaps reaching unprecedented heights for causes they believe in. Says Crombie: ''It does have huge effects on the decisions I make in life.

Such incitement only fuels anti-Jewish sentiment

Whether Thomas really meant that Israel should disappear, or that a mass expulsion of Jews should take place is unknown. But her words echo a worrying trend in which people are openly talking about a world without Israel. And I just don't mean the Iranian President who wants Israel wiped off the map. Such incitement only fuels anti-Jewish sentiment. Over the last week, a Jewish student wearing a yarmulke was assaulted at Sydney University. Unsurprisingly, The Northwest Intelligence Network reports: "A palpable animosity against Israel and the Jews, most recently exacerbated by media bias with regard to the nature of the aid flotillas to Gaza, are generating a new and vicious level of anti-Semitism worldwide." Across the Arab world, hateful and anti-Semitic newspaper cartoons have fanned the flames of intolerance. In Al-Watan, Qatar, a hook nosed, black-hatted Jew with tentacles holds a bloody knife and a gun; in Al Iqtisadiyya, Saudi Arabia, a flag with the Swastika is shown over a Star of David, with an image of a skull and crossbones. The Turkish government has labelled the Israeli raid a massacre, and likened it to 911. Its ambassador to the US said last Friday that Hamas is a key and necessary part of the "Final solution" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Such comments, inadvertent as they may be, would horrify those who know history. Turkey, part of NATO, who wants to Rosetta Stone Japanese become a member of the EU, should do well to avoid its self-righteous outbursts and look back at its past - specifically the Armenian Genocide and the way it has treated the Kurdish Independence movement that by some estimates has so far led to the death of 40,000 lives. Thankfully, the history books are slowly being corrected. Here is what Tony Blair, Special envoy of the Quartet of Middle East peace mediators, said yesterday about the flotilla incident: "There's no question that there are rockets fired from Gaza and that there are people in Gaza who want to kill innocent Israelis. When it comes to security, I'm 100 per cent on Israel's side. Israel has the right to inspect what goes into Gaza." Kuwaiti journalist Abdallah Al-Hadlaq agrees, writing that the outcome of the Israeli navy's operation was "in direct proportion to the violence" of the flotilla activists. He further notes that the flotilla organisers are known to have ties with global and regional terror organisations. Robert Fulford tries to explain the enmity towards Israel by quoting from The Israel Test, a book by George Gilder. Gilder writes: "Without oil, beset by passionate enemies, Israel has nevertheless achieved astonishing, unprecedented success. It now stands second only to the United States in microchips, telecom, software, biotech, medical devices and renewable energy. Per capita, it's easily the most innovative country on the planet." Fulford ends his article with this question: "Gilder's "Israel test" asks how others respond to this achievement. Do we study, admire and emulate it? Or do we consider it a devilish trick and hope to see it destroyed? I think we all know the answer.

Welcome to the hangover

Welcome to the hangover after the party . . . Kym Vercoe gets to grip with the aftermath of the great recession. Photo: Heidrun Lohr Reader rating: Rating: 45 out of 5 stars (11 votes) Genre Theatre B-Sharp, Belvoir St, November 26Until December 19THE Sydney trio Post's contribution to this two-part response to the worldwide market meltdown is titled Everything I Know About The Global Financial Crisis In One Hour. In this case, ''everything'' equates to a gleeful ''not much''. Unlike David Hare's doggedly inquiring The Power of Yes, which made an attempt to unravel the credit crunch debacle, Zoe Coombs Marr, Natalie Rose and Mish Grigor explain the global financial crisis not as it happened, but ''as you reckon it happened''. And so, for 45 minutes, the trio delivers a series of increasingly off-kilter riffs assembled from recorded free-association sessions. Absurd conspiracy theories arise and are repeated like truths. Who's to blame? Bernie Mac and (novelty goods chain) Granny May's? Colonel Sanders and Daddy Warbucks? Advertisement: Story continues below And what of the central importance to the world economy of corn, especially Canada Goose Danmark the popped variety? Nonsensical diagrams plotted on a blackboard add to the confusion. Everything I Know makes for a playful tilt at the way in which the language of the so-called experts is filtered, sorted and appropriated. It's funny and free of po-faced finger-pointing, though as its structure repeats, it begins to feel like a capitulation to the complexity of the crisis; a response from individuals who didn't feel the house of cards crashing in on their heads. Instead they dance to Korn's cover of Cameo's Word Up! They wave their hands in the air like they just don't care. The second part (The Market Is Not Functioning Properly), made by the documentary performance company Version 1.0, is a more gripping and personal statement. While three screens show flickering footage of Obama, Bush and Rudd expressing dreary reassurances, and interview subjects ponder their own predicaments, performers Kym Vercoe and Jane Phegan embody market hysteria and to a large extent, the Gen-X predicament. The party is over. Welcome to the hangover. Watching them lay out a sheaf of monthly bills - the kind we all juggle - and attempt to consolidate their finances (on credit, of course), most will be struck by how distressingly normal it now feels to be up to the eyeballs in debt.

First Muslim-friendly virtual world goes online

A trial version of the world's first Muslim-friendly virtual world has gone online where users can create their own persona, design their own rooms, buy virtual items and interact with others. Called Muxlim Pal and created by the Finnish-based company Muxlim, the English-language site caters primarily to Muslims living in western countries who long to reconnect with other Muslims and Muslim culture. "Muxlim Pal is just another channel for our users to socialise, have fun and express themselves using social media in a safe and friendly atmosphere," Muxlim chief executive Mohamed El-Fatatry, 23, told. Advertisement: Story continues below On Muxlim Pal, which is free of charge to join, users can shop for clothes for their avatar at the mall, hang out at the beach cafe, pray at the mosque or go to concerts. What makes Muxlim Pal different from other popular websites such as Second Life is that content portraying violence, drugs, sexual references or profanity is not allowed. Users can flag content they find unsuitable and inform community managers, who will delete material after it has been flagged a number of times. The absence of obscene material is not only out of respect for Muslim values, but also to create a family-friendly site. "We are not trying to segregate anybody; we are trying to build a platform for Muslims to have a voice and dialogue with others," El-Fatatry said. He said he believed Muslims who live in countries where they are in the minority have a greater need to express themselves and share content than those who live in countries where they are in the majority. "In majority Rosetta Stone Greek countries every restaurant is a halal restaurant, so you don't need to go online to find things like that," he said. El-Fatatry discovered young Muslims were yearning for online content relating to their lifestyle after he moved to Finland five years ago from Dubai and set up a website. "When (video-sharing site) YouTube started, I collected a number of Muslim songs and video clips from there and put them on a static page. In a matter of three days, that single page received more traffic than my whole website for one year," he said. On Muxlim, visitors can read Al-Jazeera news, listen to the Koran and chat with people, among other things. The site has some 1.5 million visitors per month from 190 different countries. Half of the visitors are from the United States. "The US and the UK are about 70 percent of our market, so we will not be looking at any other markets for the time being," El-Fatatry said. El-Fatatry pointed out it was easier to create revenues in countries with high Internet adoption and widespread online payment methods. "This allows us to make money from those users and to sustain the company. Later we will look into (Muslim) majority countries as well," he explained. A typical Muxlim user is a woman in her mid-s who's looking for entertainment content online. While 98 percent of Muxlim's users are Muslim, the company believes the number of non-Muslims will increase in the future. Muxlim Pal is the company's latest attempt to create new income channels, in addition to advertising, a major source of revenue. On Muxlim Pal, users can purchase coins and use them to buy clothing, furniture and other items for their avatar. A number of Muslim countries are known to block access to some Internet sites, but El-Fatatry said he was not concerned about the issue. According to Reporters Without Borders, Tehran blocks the YouTube site in Iran because it considers some of the content immoral, while Saudi Arabia has set up a commission to filter the Internet.

A stitch in time

Photo: Simon Letch A tailor-made holiday leaves Stephanie Clifford-Smithworse for wear. It's a great idea in theory: go to a tailor while holidaying inAsia and come home with a new wardrobe for the price of achain-store shirt. It works for some people but, speaking as awoman who has tried six tailors across Thailand, India and Vietnam, and come home with bags of bodgie, ill-fitting clothes, I can tellyou the whole exercise is fraught. Even if you know a bit about dressmaking and can check onpertinent details, it won't necessarily be plain sailing. Thefollowing tips should help prevent a few disasters but, bearing inmind the pressure tailors are under to finish work within 24 hoursand the fact English is rarely their first language, there are noguarantees. Good luck. Advertisement: Story continues below FabricsYour mouth may water at the delicious colours of Thaisilks but silk might not be the most suitable fabric for thegarment you want. I took a favourite pair of black crepe trousersinto a tailor and asked for them to be copied once in purple Thaisilk and again in cream gabardine. Disasters both. The copies wereexact in cut and finish but both fabrics were too stiff for thestyle and didn't fall softly, as the original pair had. Yes, I chose the fabrics and the tailor did as he was asked, butI would have liked it if he had suggested an alternative. The mostsuccessful pieces I've had made were by a tailor in India whoworked in only two weights of cotton. So, although the choice waslimited, he knew his materials and how they'd perform in any style.Sensibly, he followed only a few styles, working from thoroughlytested pattern blocks. Tailors will often tell you what they think you want to hear. Ona mission to find wool jersey in Vietnam, I had bolts of everythingfrom cotton to nylon thrust at me with assurances that, yes, Rosetta Stone Hindi thiswas wool jersey. In one shop I was told they didn't have exactlywhat I needed but they had something even better. With great ceremony and handling worthy of a newborn, theyproduced a bulky, grey polar fleece and told me it wascashmere. Other materialsMake sure that once you've selected your fabric, thetailor knows to match the thread to it. It sounds obvious but insome places every garment, regardless of colour, is stitched inwhite. Fusing and interfacing - the materials used inside necklines, lapels and cuffs to give them body and support - may be too stifffor your fabric and you'll end up with something that won't sitproperly. Ensure the fusing is as close a match in weight as themain fabric. Linings are another potential problem. You might choose abeautiful cool linen for a suit but if the tailor lines it with ahorrible polyester you might as well wear an oven bag. Watch, too,for pressure to have a garment lined. You may not really want theextra layer of fabric but be talked into it with promises that thegarment will hang better. This might be true in some cases, but afew tailors like to cover up unfinished edges and charge a premiumfor the job while they're at it. MeasurementsTry to get a person of your sex to measure you. LargeWestern breasts have been known to embarrass male tailors in busyshops and they may be reluctant to run the tape measure closeenough for a good fit. Women may have similar problems with theinside-leg measure for men's trousers.

It is an unsettling feeling, like trespassing

Lawrence thinks my cultural induction would be helped by a visit to a kanikapila, a jam session held at the Coffees of Hawaii estate every Sunday, so we climb into his battered ute and hit the road again. The show is held in an open hangar with guests seated in chairs set on the pebbled earth. A group called Na Ohana Hoaloha, the Family of Friends, sings and strums traditional songs, explaining their meaning to the mostly local crowd who are encouraged to join in by dancing the hula or playing percussion. Some songs date back to 900AD, when the second wave of Polynesians came to Molokai, according to Lono, one of the players. “The songs survive through oral history, passed down through the generations. We don’t change anything because that would insult our ancestors and bring hewa, trouble. We keep it the same so we don’t invite bad spirits.” Good and bad spirits, powerful magic and kahunas (‘‘those who know the secrets’’) are frequent topics in my conversations with Hawaiians. Such concepts are not easy for blow-ins like me to grasp but I get the feeling we’re not supposed to. It’s enticing enough to get a sense that they persevere and that there are those, like Lawrence and his uncle, who continue to practise the old ways. For hundreds of years, Molokai has been renowned for its “powerful magic” and shunned by outsiders. “There’s still very much an elusive side to our culture that stems from 18,” Lawrence says, “when the missionaries came and banned the hula and stopped us speaking our language.” Maintaining tradition, being faithful to ancestors, is central to life on Molokai. That’s why tourism is deliberately low-key here and why development is not courted the way it has been elsewhere in Hawaii. “[Hawaiian] culture has been destroyed on the other islands, overrun by foreign investment,” Lawrence Rosetta Stone German says. “Molokai isn’t for everybody. It is for the few who will enjoy this laid-back lifestyle, learning about the culture and the history.” The island’s most shocking history lesson is found at the base of a 500-metre cliff. To reach it you mount a mule and ride in single file almost five kilometres down a narrow jungle track. Often the path is hemmed in by vegetation but there are regular clearings, especially on the 26 switchbacks that reveal amazing views of the mountain face shearing down to a sparkling bay beneath. Our destination is the leper colony at Kalaupapa, where 19 former patients are living out their days in an idyllic setting that has a brutal history. The first lepers were exiled to this lovely, lonely peninsula in 1866, victims of a prevailing religious dogma that held their disease was an “affliction from God”, a punishment for their sins. In reality it is a bacterium that attacks parts of the nervous system. Between 1866 and 1969, when Hawaii’s isolation laws were finally abolished, many thousands of sufferers were banished to this natural prison. At the bottom of the mountain, mule-riders board a vintage school bus for a tour of the settlement. We are forbidden to make contact with residents or to photograph them but it is rare for former patients to stir when tourists are afoot. The streets are so quiet it feels like a ghost town, except you know people are present. They have nowhere to go, after all. It is an unsettling feeling, like trespassing. It is also troubling to think we now pay to get close to people who were banned from society. I ask our guide, Kianini, what the residents think of becoming a tourist attraction for rubbernecks like us. “Half of them care for it, half of them don’t,” he replies.

Are our doctors and nurses not the best on the planet?

Where Havanna once glistened with capitalist toys and dirty Jew money we now have more modest displays providing only what we should use and no more. There is no need for groaning shelves of food and useless consumer items! We have enough food basic food to sustain our bodies and nurture our hearts and minds. Did not Christ himself survive on little?! We have enough modern conveniences to make us productive and efficient but not wasteful. Unlike the dirty, polluting, environment hating Yanquis, we in Cuba cherish our bond with nature. Like our forbears in misty times gone by, we live in harmony with our surroundings. Here in Cuba we are not rapacious out of control spoilt consumerists. We are spiritual and aware humans not egotistical, lying individualists! We are my friends, simply superior in our equal society! Look further at the colossal achievements we have made in medicine, education and sports. Is not Cuban socialist health care the envy of the world? Are our doctors and nurses not the best on the planet? Is our system not the most equal, the most socialized and the most accessible? Are not our schools the glory of the world? Are not Cuban students the highest achievers in the world in any subject? Are not Cubans renowned for their intelligence? Likewise in sports we reign supreme in baseball; boxing and track and field able to vanquish the fat, insipid Westerners, drunk on their mindless entertainment and leisurely nonsense as we Cubans stay fit, trim and elegant. Are we not the best athletes in any of our chosen sports? Of course we are! Dear comrades it is obvious Rosetta Stone Arabic that we have the greatest system and country in the world. Everyone the world over remarks on how wonderful and great is our country. When I speak to world leaders my friends, they always remark on how lucky I am to live in Cuba and to lead the world's best people. You hear these sentiments on our state owned television about how we are the best, the proudest and the most intelligent! These statements are nothing but the truth comrades! Would I, your dear leader, your supreme father, whose tears wet his pillow each night as he lays weeping in anxiety over his people, lie to my lovely children? Of course not! When I and the Cuban state speak, we only speak reality and truth comrades! To close my dear friends I want to say the following. When my physical body passes on to the next world, my spirit will live on. Together our great country, in alliance with the greatest liberator in Latin America Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, will destroy the capitalist system and enact Christ's real vision on earth a communal utopia of loving socialists! We will prevail comrades because that is God's will and I, as an agent of God and of history, would never lie to you! America the corrupt capitalist-fascist state that it is, will fall to our communist warriors of spirit, love and community! We will reign supreme comrades! May love go with you my communist friends. Your loving Father.

The books were in the process of being written and delivered

The writer of the book of Hebrews speaks of the same sort of thing when in talking about the preaching of the gospel message by those who had heard Jesus says, "God also bearing witness (with them the speakers DS) both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will." (Heb. 2:4 NKJV) So we clearly see the purpose behind miracles, signs, wonders, gifts of the Holy Spirit, the miraculous in general when the word was being preached to people who knew it not.The Bible also gives us a second reason or purpose for spiritual gifts in the New Testament church. After a person became convinced of the truth of the gospel and obeyed it what then? He cannot order a Bible or New Testament from Amazon or Abebooks. Not only is Amazon still over 1900 years down the road into the future but the New Testament has not yet been given in its entirety. The books were in the process of being written and delivered. How do the members of the church know how to live? How do they know right from wrong? The answer was spiritual gifts given by God for the purpose of instructing the church in righteous living. Paul says of these gifts, "the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all." (1 Cor. 12:7 NKJV) He is talking about spiritual gifts. Whatever your gift was (he gives a list of them in 1 Cor. 12:8-10, see also verse 28) it was to be used to profit everyone, not just yourself. "Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel." (1 Cor. 14:12 NKJV) Edification Rosetta Stone Chinese means to build up spiritually. "Let all things be done for edification." (1 Cor. 14:26 NKJV)Understanding the purpose behind miracles and spiritual gifts helps one greatly in understanding a passage written by Paul found right in the middle of his discussion of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14, a passage where he declares that there will be an end to spiritual gifts not when Christ comes but before then. I refer to 1 Cor. 13:8-13."Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor. 13:8-13 NKJV)Let us note some things from this passage. Paul says plainly that prophecies will fail, tongues will cease, and knowledge (talking about miraculously given knowledge) will vanish. The question then becomes when? Can we find out? Yes!Something will abide after these spiritual gifts have ceased.

Everyday, tens of thousands of people around the world are searching the internet on home based businesses. Here are the most frequently asked questions by those planning to start a home based business.1. If the income potential is huge and it offers a future so bright, why is the number of those having a full time job still far greater than business owners specifically home based business owners? The reason is simply because most of us are afraid to take risks. For most people, its better to have a job where you can expect a stable income every month than to have a business where, if you get unlucky, you will face not only financial problems but other problems resulting from it as well.2. Will I make money?Yes. You will definitely make money in a home based business. You may even become rich. A lot of people are having second thoughts if they will make money because the income potential in this field is quite huge. They think that this kind of thing is too good to be true. That is not true. We all have skills in which we are good at that we can use in successfully building a home based business.3. Its possible that we can make money but can we really be successful in this business?Statistics show that 70 percent of home based business owners are successful. Thats higher compared to other kinds of businesses. Those 30 percent who fails are probably not doing anything or doing a little of something to Rosetta Stone Outlet their business and give up if they dont see any results. Its like studying a chapter or two of your book on a certain subject and expects to pass the finals. You will be successful if you do your part.4. Its a good thing that there are companies emerging online. This is called online home business, and I mean pure online business. Not MLM utilizing the internet. You dont need to sell products in order to earn and you dont need to have a very huge downline in order to earn a lot.So if you are with an MLM company, you will need to both sell and recruit. If you are with an online home based business, theres no need to sell. You only need to promote your business and attract people to join you using online strategies, or if you want, you can also do offline marketing. The good thing is that you dont need to have stocks of products at your home to sell to people and there is no need to have personal contact with them. You can always use e-mail if youre shy. This way, you have more freedom to choose whenever you want to work. Besides, MLM has gained bad image to a lot of people.

How to Select A Wedding Videographer

When selecting a videographer, it is important to know a few things before you sign a contract. You should know what type of equipment will be used, what format the video will be in, what is covered and what is not covered, how the DVD will be set up, how the audio will be captured, how many cameras will be used, and how they plan to edit your finished product. This seems like a lot to know up front, but you will soon see how important asking the right questions can be.First, what equipment will be used? Standard video recorders simply won’t do the trick. Your videographer should have professional equipment which will include a high quality camera, steady tripods, lighting if requested, backup batteries, and enough data storage to cover more than the event will require. If the equipment is not professional, then the finished product won’t be professional. The important thing to note here is the camera that will be used. A good camera usually preceeds other good equipment. It is also important to know what format the video will be shot in. You want to see something like Hi8, MiniDV, DV, or even digitally on a hard drive or other mobile storage device. The format will greatly affect the video quality, and the quality of any copies that are made, so keep that in mind. Make note of schedules, who, what, when, where, and why. Your videographer should also have access to the coordinator and use them as the resource and leave you and your spouse-to-be alone during the event. They are there to capture your moments, not create them. When setting up what is covered, be sure to find out how many cameras will be used and the pros and cons of one or multiple angles. Also be sure to ask exactly when there will be two and when there will be only one. This will make sure that you have the right expectations and aren’t disappointed with some shots that are filmed from one perspective. Video is just one part of the DVD. The sound will complete it or ruin it depending on how it is captured. It is also good to get an idea of what you want the finished product to look like. View the available samples and pick out what works for you. If you don’t find what you want, try to be as clear as possible in your expectations and desires up front and see what the video editor can and can’t do. This is the part that makes the video fun to watch. A well edited video will capture attention, have a full and smooth flow, and get all the right shots of the important parts of the wedding. Paris: Romance in the City

"I'm off to Paris." Doesn't just the sound of that declaration define the messenger as chic, worldly, romantic, or just down-right cool? Maybe I'm an old-fashioned romantic with an out-of-date vocabulary, but Paris is nothing, if not the epitome of modernity steeped in both glamorous and historic roots. Read on, if you want to enjoy it in style and luxury without giving up the 'entire' contents of your wallet. A hotel in Paris is a tricky thing: If you're looking for opulence, full-stop, the choice of the famous George V is obvious. But if you are looking for that precious and rare combination of value, luxury, and friendly, unpretentious service, the choice is equally evident: it's the Hotel Lotti. You will be surrounded by elegance from the moment you enter the lobby, in the ornate Suite Royale Lounge, and your beautifully appointed room. More important to me, however, is that in a city that is not known for its embracing and tolerant attitude toward non-French-speaking individuals, the hotel is an oasis of friendly faces from the gentleman who hails your cab and opens the door, to the General Manager of the hotel, and everyone in between. For exceptional Concierge services, ask specifically for Jean Baptiste (no, I am not joking). He will hand-pick your restaurant, including the seat and server, organize your theater tickets, and ask you if you enjoyed your evening when he sees you the next morning. Reach the Lotti at +33 1 42 60 60 62.Sights, Sounds, and Tastes of Paris: There are just to many too list here, but you'll get the idea. The sound of scooters Rosetta Stone outlet zipping by, the scent of a fresh baguette, the taste of a savory onion soup, or sweet, creamy pastry. It's all Paris. So, here are my favorite things to do and places to eat. Tour the Louvre to catch a glimpse of Mona Lisa watching you. Forget the elevator and climb the Eiffel Tower by foot. See the stained-glass at Notre Dame when the sun is high enough to come streaming through the window. Stroll the left bank, hand-in-hand. Sample as much French wine as you can without paying for it in the form of a headache later. Had enough fun for one day? Time to eat. My favorite restaurant is La Mediterranee at 2 place de L'Odeon, tel. 0143260230. You won't need to chew. Everything from the soup to the dessert melts in your mouth, the atmosphere is vie-en-rose, the specialty is fish, and the staff are determined to make it one of the experiences of Paris you'll never forget. Best Casual Bistro: 40 Place du Marche Saint-Honore Tel: 01 42 86 04 24. Not in Paris for Romance? Try Disney Paris. To me, Disney and romance is not an apt match, however, if the kids are in tow, it's a great way to break-up all the shopping and museum-hopping that some kids loathe. The rides and attractions are not on scale with Disneyworld in Orlando or Disneyland in Anaheim, but it's quite unique to be able to take the Metro from downtown Paris to the ticket-booth in less than 40 minutes. In the end, you can come to Paris with your best guy or gal, or find someone new. With kids. Without kids. With a smile and the right attitude, you'll come home with a suitcase and belly full of memories.

Key 1 - A Software ERP Directive

Key No 1 - Charting the course of success for your technology Rosetta Stone Language investmentIs your current ERP system is lacking in functionality? Does it limit your ability to respond quickly to customers' requests? Where are you placed in comparison with your competitors, and does your existing system help you or hinder you in meeting industry best practice or benchmarks? Are you simply unhappy with your current supplier and their ability to respond to your requirements, let alone those of your customers?Whatever the case, you are unlikely to stand alone in these areas - many companies have faced similar issues with their ERP systems, so no user is likely to be unique. There are common drivers you can consider in your deliberations over a replacement ERP system, and these include the measures you use to chart the success of your technology investment, the major issues you need to address and the consideration of how much pain you are willing to put up with to achieve your ultimate goal.According to Aberdeen Group's 2007 ERP in Manufacturing Benchmark Report, 328 companies out of 1245 companies surveyed were planning to replace their current ERP systems at one or more locations within the next three years. In other words, at any one time, a quarter of companies are looking to replace their existing ERP systems. In the past, enterprise resource planning has garnered a mixed reputation. While there are fundamental reasons and obvious benefits for going down the ERP path, many have feared - rightly or wrongly - that ERP entailed major organisational disruption if not re-engineering, at high cost and high risk Language Learning Software.Aberdeen Group reports ("When Replacing ERP - Size Matters", June 2007) the primary driver for large companies is consolidation and rationalisation strategies. An underlying issue, considering the proliferation of ERP and other enterprise applications, is the need for integration. These sized firms are also more heavily concerned with updating their outdated user interfaces, an important factor in raising employee productivity and efficiencies.Other issues include requirements of expansion, pressure from trading partners, compliance with regulation and even disastrous events, but overall companies looking at ERP implementations are primarily seeking "low cost options that minimise risk".Risk and cost in combination imply a concern for return on investment, but Aberdeen's surveys show that fewer than 25 per cent of respondents consistently estimate ROI to cost estimate ERP projects, and 20 per cent or less measure the actual post-implementation costs and gains to calculate ROI.In contrast, "best in class companies are on average 88 per cent more likely to estimate ROI before initiating projects and are 130 per cent more likely to measure ROI after project completion. As a result, these best performing companies produce, on average, 93 per cent more improvement across a variety of metrics such as cost reductions, schedule performance, headcount reduction or redeployment and quality improvements."The reality is that minimising risk with an ERP implementation is an achievable result and, by minimising risk, costs should also be kept under control. By following a formal process of charting the reasons for your implementation, assessing the various Portuguese Learning Software offerings from your current supplier and, importantly, from suppliers who might be new to you, and checking off against the various criteria for selection, an ERP implementation need not be a nightmare; in fact, it could prove to be the instigator of quantifiable benefits for all concerned.
